UGA Cooperative Extension: Georgia 4-H

Burton 4-H Center:
Facilities & Rentals

Facilities

The Burton 4-H Center is located on a 6-acre hammock surrounded by acres of salt marsh at the end of Lewis Avenue on Tybee Island, Georgia. Tybee Island is the northernmost barrier island in Georgia. Connected to the mainland by Highway 80, Tybee Island is approximately 15 miles east of the historic town of Savannah, Georgia.

Grounds

A basketball court, a volleyball court, shaded picnic tables and a small gazebo are all centrally located for easy and effective free-time supervision. For a more reflective time, groups can enjoy the boardwalk that leads over the marsh.

Buildings

On the site are several dormitories, a dining hall with a full kitchen, various staff housing units (including year-round camp manager's home), an A-frame (houses the office and 2 classrooms), and a screened recreation hall.

Dormitories

dormThe dormitories are simple block buildings with bunkbeds. Each dormitory bathroom has 2-3 flush toilets, sinks, and shower stalls. All dorms are heated and air conditioned. The dormitories sleep from 8-26 students each. Within each dorm is a small private room and bath for two adults.

Dormitories are assigned according to the student numbers listed on the contract. Males and females are housed in separate dorms. Each dorm must have an adult chaperone. We have no accommodations for professional bus drivers. Call the Chamber of Commerce at (912) 786-5444 for a listing of inexpensive motels on the island.

Note: No food or drinks are allowed in the dormitories.

Wheelchair Accessibility

The dining hall and two dormitories (including shower and commode) are wheelchair accessible. Our vehicles are not wheelchair accessible. With a strong adult to assist, wheelchair-bound students can fully participate in all programs.

Weekend Facility Rentals

The Burton 4-H Center offers facility rentals on most weekends, from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning. Our housing is basic dormitory style; you will need to bring your own bedding (sheets and blankets or a sleeping bag), pillow, towels, wash cloths, and soap. We provide housing only. No services are provided. We also have a recreation hall (no climate control), a classroom (A-frame, climate controlled), and an enclosed porch (climate controlled) that can be rented for meetings. Our dining hall and kitchen are not available for rental, but we have a refrigerator on the porch that can be rented where you can put your cold foods during your stay. For groups above a certain size, we can be hired to provide meal service during our environmental education season. Please contact us for details. We also have a small grill, similar to what would be found at a state or local park, that can be used for cooking meals.  A fire-ring and firewood are available for use. Please remember to extinguish all fires before leaving the fire-ring area.

If your group is interested in Environmental Education classes during their weekend facility rental, that may be arranged at least 2 months in advance on a case-by-case basis. The following classes are offered on weekends:

2-Hour Classes 1-Hour Classes
